Avian-DS Black

Avian-DS black is an etch-anodize process similar to what was known as Martin Black. Avian-DS, however, is even more absorbent of light. It is the blackest material we’ve seen in almost twenty years in this field. Coating is limited to parts fabricated from aluminum. This is a batch process, so small lots tend to be very expensive but the coating is economical for large lots or OEM quantities. This coating can only be applied to aluminum substrates.

With Avian Black-S, Sometimes More Is Less

We have always suggested that an optimum thickness for spraying Avian Black-S is approximately 3 mils (3 coats) thick. And indeed, at that thickness, one can get a very matte coating of about 3% reflectance over a very wide wavelength range, as shown by the reflectance plot on our website.
Recently, however, we had a customer come to us and say that we were being very conservative with that 3% R that we quote. The customer said that they were able to decrease the reflectance to around 2%R by adding more coats, and even less if one sprayed from a longer distance to get a rougher texture. As this coating is really loaded with binder, even something that appears to be overspray has very good adhesion properties.
So we tried to replicate the customer’s results and discovered they were correct! With seven coats (7 mils), we were able to drop the coating reflectance to about 2.1-2.2%R in the NIR (2.5% in the visible). And when we sprayed from a distance of approximately 15 inches, the reflectance dropped to 2% in the visible and around 1.9%R in the NIR.
So, if you need really low reflectance in a spray on coating and you can live with a slightly thicker coating build, this is the way to go. Give us a call and we will share with you how we do it.
