Application Tips & Techniques for Avian Technologies Coatings

Spraying Tips & Techniques

Testing Spray Pattern

Test your spray pattern on cardboard before coating your intended material. In addition to pattern size, take note of the consistency of the coating. Manipulate the spray nozzle to adjust.

Note that measurements supplied are only for use with standard-sized HVPL spray equipment. When spraying very small parts with an airbrush, adjustments must be made.

Spray Pattern

Position spray gun and target surface approximately  30-45 cm (12-18 inches) apart.

Spraying Hemispheres

Spray the interior of the hemisphere in one direction, then adjust to spray again 90° from the original pattern. See the video below for a demonstration.

Spraying Coating on Substrates

Some examples of coating sprayed on various substrates below, such as pieces made from aluminum, stainless steel, Delrin, and plastics. Examples of objects that can be sprayed include port frames, aperature plates, baffles, etc.

Coating Thickness vs. Number of Coats

Avian-B Specification

20 - 25 coats = 20 +/- 4 mils (0.5 mm +/- 0.1 mm)

Avian-D Specification

16-20 coats = 20 +/- 4 mils (0.5 mm +/- 0.1 mm)

Avian Black-S Specification

3-4 coats = 4 mils (0.05 mm)

Drying Tips & Techniques

Drying Under Heat Lamps

Recommended setup:

Heat Source: 250 Watt heat lamp
Distance: 18 inches/45 cm between heat source and coated surfaces
Temperature: 32° C / 90° F
Duration: 4-5 minutes between coats. Longer duration times can increase potential for cracking and peeling; shorter duration times increase potential for blistering.

Drying At Room Temperature

Room temperature for this purpose should be 15-30° C (60-85° F)
Duration: 8-10 minutes between coats. Longer duration times can increase potential for cracking and peeling; shorter duration times increase potential for blistering.
